| Bill Goodwin -- an almost completely self-taught drummer, attributes hisearly interest in the drums to Shelly Mann's playing on the moviesound track of The Man With the Golden Arm. Earlier he had taken piano lessons andstudied the saxophone because his family believed that everyone should be able to read and understandmusic. He has been a professionaldrummer since 1959 and has played with Bill Evans, Stan Getz,JimHall, George Shearing, Gerry Mulligan, Joe Williams,TonyBennett, Manhattan Transfer, and June Christy to namea few. He first came to the east coast in 1969 as the drummer withGaryBurton. After three years with the Burton group, and tired of the road,Bill settled down in the Poconos and started working the resorts. It wasthere that he and bassist Steve Gilmore became a team. Goodwin andGilmore became charter members of the Phil Woods Quartet (now quintet),and have remained since February 1974. Phil Woods says,"Bill is the magic ingredient in our all acoustic group. Bill is one ofthe masters who plays the song, not just the time. He shades and tintsbeautifully. He plays the music." Bill Goodwin hasproduced all of the Phil Woods Quintet and Little Big Band recordings since1980, including the Grammy Award winning albums, MORE LIVE (Adelphi),ATTHE VANGUARD (Antilles), and the 1992 Grammy nominee, ALL BIRD'SCHILDREN (Concord Jazz.)
